Historical backfill: prepared on October 4, 2026; observations stop at the article date, using the US close.

Microsoft gained about 0.8% and Amazon 1.3% on August 24. NVIDIA fell 2.9%, AMD 3.5% and Micron 5.8%; the semiconductor ETF SMH lost roughly 2.4%, versus QQQ’s 1.0% decline. The two cloud buyers rose while several chip suppliers fell.

Equipment purchases enter their accounts differently. Microsoft and Amazon usually record capital investment, while suppliers may recognize revenue under the relevant rules; payment and recognition need not occur together. Customers need utilization and later revenue to absorb depreciation. Suppliers’ profits also depend on selling prices and competition.

Microsoft and Amazon have substantial non-AI businesses, and chip companies started from different valuations and prior gains. The split fits greater attention to cloud monetization and weaker hardware premiums, but it could also be a temporary supplier reversal. The close provides neither a measured flow from hardware into applications nor a verdict on which side earns the better return on AI spending.
