Quarter-End Returned to Tech
June 30 gave technology a clean quarter-end bid. QQQ rose 1.7%, SMH 3.8%, AMD 7.7%, Nvidia 2.6%, and Micron 0.8%. Taiwan’s TSMC rose 1.7%, while MediaTek, Alchip, Global Unichip, and ASE-related exposure all moved sharply higher. In China, CSI 1000 rose 2.5%, CSI 500 2.4%, and CSI 300 1.1% (sources: Yahoo Finance, Yahoo Finance Taiwan, China Securities Index Co.; June 30, 2026).
The day looked like the market concentrating back into the easiest quarter-end story. Over the prior two weeks, leadership rotated among memory, equipment, Taiwan design services, and A-share growth. On June 30, those threads temporarily folded back into the broad “AI tech” frame. Finnhub / Yahoo headline aggregation also carried phrases such as “semiconductors lift technology” and “tech-fueled rally,” showing the narrative layer moving with price (source: Finnhub / Yahoo aggregated headlines, June 30, 2026).
Macro did not fully cooperate. TLT fell 1.2%, GLD was roughly flat, and VIX returned to 16.45. The 10-year breakeven inflation rate printed 2.24 on June 30 (sources: Yahoo Finance, Cboe, FRED). This was not an everything-rallies-on-easier-rates day. It was lower volatility allowing capital to concentrate in the most available growth story.
The Other Side
The constructive reading says tech strong into quarter-end and VIX back near 16 means the AI chain has retaken the tape. Price supports that, especially AMD and high-beta Taiwan.
The cautious reading says long bonds did not rise, gold did not rise, Korea only repaired modestly, and TSMC gained only 1.7%. The strongest move came from high-beta tech, not full-chain confirmation. That matters because high-beta can lift sentiment without proving the demand chain has fully improved.
What To Watch
June 30 says that when the market needs a clean story, AI tech is still the easiest one. The early-July test is whether this becomes a new leg or stays quarter-end rebalancing. If TSMC, Korea memory, A-share tech, and SMH continue in the same direction, the theme is extending. If only high-beta names run, the quarter-end effect is doing more of the work.
