Historical note: compiled on October 4, 2026; the observation cutoff is the date in this article (2026-06-10, New York close).

May CPI, published by BLS on June 10, rose 4.2% year over year and 0.5% month over month after seasonal adjustment. Excluding food and energy, core CPI increased 2.9% annually and 0.2% monthly. The gap between headline and core sits inside the same release.

Energy prices rose 3.9% in May and contributed more than 60% of the monthly headline increase. Households were already paying higher energy prices, while the core monthly increase was much smaller. The 4.2% headline did not describe every category’s pace, and the report did not settle whether energy pressure would spread further.

At the New York close, SPY fell about 1.6%, QQQ 2.0%, gold ETF GLD 4.1% and long-duration Treasury ETF TLT 0.3%. The ten-year nominal yield rose from 4.53% to 4.55%; the two-year stayed at 4.13%. These assets weakened on the release day, but their closing prices do not separate how much of the decline came from CPI.
